Cyber risks are a growing concern for airports around the world. Many experts believe that Artificial intelligence, with proper training can defend against even the worst of security breaches. Thereby creating a positive outcome for airports and maybe more importantly their users. The question is when (if?) airports will take the steps needed to prepare for the new wave of Cyber risks?
Incredibly connected and amazingly complicated systems are a now standard part of all modern airports. The use of greater data-sharing, both internally and between airports, results in a huge increase in cyber risks. There is vulnerability at these end points, through both personnel and digital systems. This points to an increase in threat of cyber risks creating a potentially catastrophic disruption.
The Big challenge
For real time security awareness in an airport, there is a requirement to combine information from many different data sources.
Suspicious activity is usually detected by a group of actions taking place, as opposed to a single observation. Tighter integration of all data sources is a first good step toward mitigating cyber risks. Single systems might not see a cyber risk in someone trying to buy a last-minute ticket and being turned away. This same action might be interpreted very differently if ticket counter staff were sharing information. Either within a single airport or across multiple airports. This would enable them to observe that same person attempting to buy last-minute tickets at multiple counters. A very suspicious behavior, indicating a possible cyber risk previously undetectable.
Cyber Risk Detection
Currently airline ticketing data sources operate as proprietary formats on proprietary systems and they aren’t accessible even on a local level. Increasing the connection of these data sources would logically lead to increased awareness of potential cyber threats.
This would allow security and connected personnel to make more informed observations about what is or isn’t a potential cyber risk.
As with any new technology, more so one that is responsible for the travel plans of millions of people a day, it takes time. Time to understand the possible cyber risks, time to determine how to stop them. Perhaps even most important have people on staff with the ability to understand the depth of the possible exposure and how to secure it.
